Successor of W40K: Chaos Gate rocks the XCOM-style hut

Actually, fans of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k cannot complain. While other popular franchise are neglected, there are games with the Warhammer licenses. Between 2014 and 2021 alone, more than 60 Warhammer -Games were released. While the fantasy offshoot with the “Total War: Warhammer” series is a (multi-part) highlight, but in most cases the numerous 40K adaptations from this phase could hardly be more generic and interchangeable.

When we discovered Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters in the release list for May 2022, our first thought was also: Uff, generic title, again tactics and of course we control Space Marines. And we have never heard of anything from the developer Complex Games. The thing will probably not even be worth the many letters in the title. We couldn’t have been wrong…

Continued with XCOM-Vibes

First you should know that there was a chaos gate game before, in 1998. And just like the predecessor, the Chaos Gate Gate – Daemonhunters published on May 5, 2022 is particularly based on a model: on the XCOM series of myth Games or Firaxis. This is not a remarkable news. Many tactics games of recent years copy XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2. But only a few other developers are so successful to transport the known elements into their own universe and spice up with sensible changes and innovations.

Also in Chaos Gate Gate – Daemonhunters you have a central basis that you should upgrade and maintain. For each mission, you build a team of four from Gray Knights from your squad, which can be leveled and equipped. And if you perform a cool action in the round tactics fights, it is spectacularly staged in a short sequence. Anyone who played Xcom will immediately feel at home.

Fantastic W40K implementation

As for the changes from the known formula: Have you ever annoyed yourself in XCOM when your fighter makes you on storm troops despite a high probability of hits (not even a shy gate)? Well, the Gray Knights are elite fighters and don’t shoot over. If you are targeting an opponent with such a navy, you can see at a glance how much damage will cause you. There are only deviations if you hit critically or if your opponent parried a close combat strike, contrary to expectations.

In general, it feels great to move over the card with the soldiers and to tear down Chaosgott Nurgle’s troops. When the Gray Knights get up a hill, skip a gap or splinter through a glass window, then we feel the power, but also the mass that is in our fighters. The same applies if a navy disassembles a gate with a brutal footrest into its individual parts or when he rains a stone column with a shoulder shock to an opponent group.

We also pack the martial, thick armor and power weapons of the Gray Knights, which even in the bloodiest slaughter-dry comments by the fighters and the fantastic designed base ship, you simply notice that W40K fans were involved in the implementation. Especially since the graphic is really impressive. The cards are not only in detail, you can also destroy a lot away from goals, windows and columns, for example tearing entire walls with a grenade. And if a knight straightens a battered opponent (which gives all team members a further point of action), then no eye stays dry, no arm on the torso and no head on the shoulders.

story and progression

But what is Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters actually? We had already mentioned Chaosgott Nurgle. Of course, he is the driving, corrupt force behind the flower, a rapidly spreading plague that rages through the galaxy. Under the leadership of the Inquisitor Vakir, it is at the Gray Knights of the Edict of the mischief to get to the bottom of the origin of the plague and to find a way to stop the flower.

Between the missions you always expect a stopover on your ship, where you speak to Vakir, but also with other great crew members. You use the seeds conquered in the fights to initiate research projects through which you learn, for example, to teleport your knights in the fights. Or you work on opposites to reduce the corruption level of the systems.

In the barracks you will find your Gray Knights, which not only can be equipped, but also own talent trees. And you can also further improve the ship itself over time. And then there is the star card, on which the travel route to the next system gives you or just let it pass for a few days to treat injured fighters or to finish a research or a ship upgrade.
