FC Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus sees Ralf Rangnicks new double role critical
Clear edge from the record national player: Lothar Matthäus is critical of Ralf Rangnick’s future double function as a national coach and consultant of Manchester United.
“First of all, I don’t necessarily find it good that you do two work. Even a Ralf Rangnick, which I appreciate as a specialist, should focus on a work,” emphasized the 61-year-old in conversation with “Sky”.
Matthäus continues: “I wouldn’t have done that now as Austria. They had other options, they had national candidates on their list.”
Rangnick received a contract for two years from the Austrian Association, the goal is the 2024 European Championship in Germany. If the qualification succeeds, the contract of the 63-year-old former Bundesliga coach is automatically extended to the 2026 World Cup.
In May, the outgoing interim coach of Manchester United will start his work at the ÖFB. In the future, Manchester will be available for six days a month.
“If he gets it under one roof – and Austria accepts it – then it is one thing that I don’t want to get in between,” Matthäus commented on the decision.
Neville also criticizes Rangnick’s double role
Previously, former English defender Gary Neville had already shared his skepticism.
“The Manchester Uniteds director or consultant of Manchester United can really look at Austrian players every week? And then they choose for the national team?” Asked Neville in his podcast for “Sky Manchester Uniteds”.
There is a conflict, according to the former Manunited professional: “The Austrian national team proudly has a great country and some great players, so he has to watch players all week, then he will be in September, October, November and March Training for two weeks. What happens with his work for United? Where is the priority? “
Neville described the constellation as “chaotic” and referred to the big Manchester Uniteding problems of the English record champion.
